SAN CRISTÓBAL, THE PATRON SAINT OF CASTELLÓN

With the arrival of July, the city of Castellón prepares to honor one of its patron saints: San Cristóbal. A celebration in which the Federació Gestora de Gaiates takes a leading role, as it assumes the organization of an essential part of the events with which the patron saint is honored.
In this edition, we took up the customs again after two long years of the pandemic, in which the Festival was not celebrated or in a more restricted way. In the 2022 edition, we should have returned to normality. Still, some of the most typical traditions of this celebration were missing, such as the blessing of the vehicles and the delivery of the traditional blessed ribbon of San Cristóbal. This year, we will not be able to hang the ribbon from the rearview mirror of our car. In addition, we did not enjoy the mascletà because it could not be fired in the past Magdalena Festival due to the inclement weather. But, let’s take it bit by bit.

The Eucharistic celebration was scheduled at noon in the Cathedral of Santa María with the presence, in the first pews, the Queens of the Festival, Carmen and Gal·la. They are already facing the final stretch of his long reign, which began in 2020. They accompanied all his court of honor that make up their respective Ladies of the City -among which, the Sequiol@s we have Àgueda- and representatives of the nineteen sector commissions. Despite the rigors of the date, all wore their best castelloneras clothes, and they, as protocol dictates, with their heads covered with elegant mantillas.
The representation of Sequiol was headed by our Madrinas, Lourdes Climent, and Alejandra Sáez, accompanied, on this occasion, by Vice President Javier Rodríguez. Despite the heat, they enjoyed, excited, the solemn mass. Once finished, a spectacular ringing of the bells of the Fadrí announced the procession that moved such a distinguished court, along with the city’s highest authorities, to the emblematic Primer Molí where the gunpowder awaited.
